Building towards a new campaign

Brechin City manager Jim Weir has hopes of adding to his squad within the next few weeks (writes Sarah McLean).

So far the club has made just one signing in Andy Jackson but have also secured a few familiar faces including Euan Moyes.

Now, Weir is looking to bring in a few more before the 2012/13 season begins.

Weir said: “I’m looking to add to the squad as we are a few players short at the moment. It’s harder than usual as there are a lot of them on holiday at the moment so it’s taking some time.

“I’ve been speaking to a few players but unfortunately we have lost out to a few who have chosen to go elsewhere.”

He added: “I was disappointed with Brian Hodge as we had reached an agreement for him to stay on but he went on holiday and by the time he came back he had decided against it because of the travelling involved.

“So we will also be looking to replace him but we will have to be patient.”

With the season still a few weeks off, the Ramsden’s Cup draw took place on Tuesday afternoon (yesterday) after the Brechiner had gone to press. Weir said: “Obviously it’s not a competition that is high on our priorities but we will see what we get in the draw, however, we will have to do better than last year.”

So far the club has confirmed four pre-season matches: July 14, Montrose, away, 3pm; July 17, Queen’s Park, away, closed door; July 21, Dundee, home, 2pm; July 24, Inverness CT, home, 7.30pm. The manager is looking to add another game to this list in the near future.

Meanwhile, City favourite Charlie King has joined near neighbours Forfar Athletic, on a one-year deal, having been released by the club at the end of the season.
