Members of Brechin City Youths Football Club have set up a new committee to raise funds to assist with the running of the club.

The committee consists of players’ parents, who are providing some of their free time to organise various events.

Brechin City Youths has provided youth football within Brechin and the surrounding area since its formation in 1972 and now has 11 teams, which include both boys and girls.

Managers, coaches, first-aiders and parent helpers are all volunteers who provide a great deal of their own time and effort in the many duties associated with running a team throughout the season.

Every team has suitably qualified coaches and at least one first-aider.

By playing sport youths are encouraged to exercise, keep active and participate in a positive healthy activity and for this reason the club offers a valuable service to the local community.

Brechin City Youths FC believe that all players and officials should be within a safe environment for football and for this reason complies and has been awarded the ACE gold Award and the SFA Quality Mark standard award.

This accreditation relates to recognising safe, effective and child-friendly club environments.

The fund-raising team representative, Mandy Ferries, said: “The idea of a fund-raising committee is not just about raising funds but also creating a better bond between all age groups, with a bit of fun thrown in.

“We provide an opportunity for children to play football and this keeps the young people focused and active.

“We can only achieve this by being able to supply them with the relevant equipment, kits and facilities year after year.

“This costs money and times are hard at the moment and this club is no different as it feels the pinch so it was decided that we needed a concerted effort to raise funds for our considerable membership so that the club can continue in future years”.

The first event will be a adult quiz night to be held at the Northern Hotel, Clerk Street, Brechin from 7 pm on Friday, October 21, followed by a “Hallowe’en Disco” on Friday, October 28, in the City Hall, Brechin, for those in the eight to 11 years bracket, followed by one for the 12 to 16 years age group.

Tickets for both will be on sale from Hendry’s newagents next week.

The committee members are to be producing players calendars this year and ask that any company/firm wishing to place an advert get in touch.

The fund-raising committee would be most appreciative if Brechin City Youths would be considered to have community support.

Anyone who would like to contribute in any way towards the club should contact Mandy Ferries on 01356 625292 or e-mail

If any of the parents wish to help or assist with the fund-raising committee the next meeting will be held at The Stables, Market Street, Brechin, at 7 pm on Wednesday, September 14.
