Cup progress for Brechin Vics

Vics started strongly with Buggins shooting wide from 18 yards in the first minute. They were dominant and Easton should have done better on 12 minutes but his effort from eight yards went wide of the target.

Buggins again came close a minute later but his cross-cum-shot found no takers. Whitworth then had an effort but his shot was high and wide. Vics were shocked when Coupar took the lead on 16 minutes.

A slack defensive header found McKillen wide on the right. He mis-hit his cross and the ball sailed high over Robbie in the Vics goal. Vics continued to press and got a deserved equaliser on 25 minutes. The ball was played into the box and found S Eaton who from eight yards took a touch before placing it past the ‘keeper. Disaster hit Vics on the half hour mark when a defensive mix up presented Falganon with the easiest of chances of tapping into the empty net.

Vics pushed until the half time with Fyfe having a great run and a shot which went just over before the same player seen another effort deflected over the cross bar.

Half-time: Btrechin Vics 1, Coupar Angus 2.

Vics started the second half in determined fashion with Fyfe again just wide with his shot. Vics got back on level terms on 57 minutes when a great Gourlay cross to the back post found Robertson who dived to head into the goal from six yards.

Vics were in total command at this point and should have gone in front on the hour mark when another Gourlay cross found Whitworth who just failed to get the necessary touch on the ball. Vics took the lead for the first time in 60 minutes when a great Buggins run into the box saw him body checked and a penalty was awarded. Easton scored from the spot kick.

Fyfe got back into the action but again his effort was just wide of the target. Robertson produced a good save from the Coupar goalkeeper as Vics tried to secure the tie. Vics scored their fourth on 81 minutes after good link up play between Buggins and Fyfe resulted in Buggins being played in on goal. He smashed an unstoppable shot past the ‘keeper from 12 yards.

Fyfe came close on 86 minutes this time seeing his shot hit the post with the ‘keeper beaten. Vics were made to sweat when on 89 minutes Coupar had a breakaway with McKillen breaking clear and slotting past the helpless Robbie.

Although not at their best Vics progressed to the third round of the Emirates Scottish Cup, something they have failed to do for many seasons.

Vics created numerous chances but poor finishing and some slack defending gave Coupar encouragement and hope.

Vics are back on league business on Saturday, October 27, with a home game against Lochee Harp.

Kick off is at 2.30 p.m
