BRECHIN Vics suffered a three-one league defeat at Arbroath Vics on Saturday.
Arbroath were first to threaten in two minutes when Robbie had to be at his best diving to his right to save a shot from 18 yards.
Arbroath were dominating the opening exchanges and took the lead from the penalty spot in the eighth minute.
Gourlay brought down Fotheringham in the box and a penalty was awarded. Gray sent Robbie the wrong way from the resultant kick.
Brechin were finding it hard to get into the game and had to wait until 20 minutes before creating an opportunity.
Buggins headed on to Fyfe but the Arbroath keeper just got to the ball as Fyfe closed in on goal.
Ten minutes later Scott had an attempt but the keeper saved his 25-yard free-kick quite comfortably.
Arbroath were continuing to look dangerous and extended their lead in 34 minutes, when Simpson headed the ball past Robbie from some eight yards.
Just on the stroke of half-time Gourlay had an effort but his looping header was easily saved by the Arbroath keeper.
Vics came out in determined fashion in the second half and immediately created an opportunity.
Paul Ross and Steven Eaton combined to create a chance for Scott but his shot from 18 yards was just wide of the target with the keeper beaten.
Vics pulled a goal back four minutes into the second period, when Fyfe unleashed a shot from 25 yards which took a slight deflection and sailed over the Arbroath keeper.
Vics were looking more like themselves as they worked to get the equalising goal but were finding it hard to create any clear cut chances.
Arbroath continued to look dangerous and caused the Vics rearguard many problems.
Vics made a double substitution in 65 minutes, with C. Eaton and D. Ross replacing Laing and S. Eaton.
Arbroath extended their lead in 72 minutes and again it was ex-manager Simpson who did the damage.
Brechin were on attack when Buggins was accidently blocked by the referee as he made his way inside the penalty box.
Arbroath gained possession and broke quickly. The ball was played to Simpson, who from a suspiciously offside position rounded Robbie before finishing from six yards.
Try as they might Brechin could not get into the game and Arbroath ran out deserved winners.

Brechin never got going in what was a very disappointing performance.
Full credit to their opponents who deservedly gained the three points.
Brechin must pick themselves up for their final league game away to Coupar Angus on Saturday (kick-off 2.30 pm).
