Disappointing start for Under-17s

Brechin City Under-17s 1

Muirfield Athletic Under-17s 4

Brechin City Youths Under-17s began their new campaign, under new management, with a disastrous start.

Goalkeeper Gregor O’Neill was given a straight red in the 15th minute after advancing out of the box and was deemed to have handled the ball outside the area.

Striker Kev Lamb donned the gloves for the remainder of the game, making a solid save from the proceeding freekick.

Muirfield made the most of their one-man advantage, and by 25 minutes scored two goals in quick succession.

Brechin wouldn’t lie down and silky interlinking passes saw a great move started by Ian Black and onto Ewan Wilson who burst down the right, before laying off to Cameron Watt.

Watt then fired in a thunderous strike, which was parried by the Muirfield ‘keeper to Craig Winton, who was waiting on the edge of the box and he drilled it home.

Just before half time, the Muirfield number nine was given his marching orders for kicking out, levelling up the teams.

Half-time: Brechin Under-17s 1, Muirfield Under-17s 2.

A midfield switch was made with Cameron Masson making way for Jason Boyes and Brechin’s momentum continued, advancing into the opponents half at every opportunity.

Cameron Stout worked tirelessly alone up front and broke the offside trap, beat three defenders and the advancing ‘keeper, but just couldn’t get that final touch to net an equaliser.

In the 65th minute, Brechin made a change to their system with Dylan Thomson replacing Mitchell Dye. Moments later, however, Muirfield broke away and made it 3-1. By the 76th minute, they added another goal to make it 4-1.

Olly McClelland and Bryce Leitch came on for Hodds and Watt, but were unable to make a difference to the disheartened Brechin team.

Team: O’Neill, Dye, Peters, Black, Gilbert, Winton, Watt, Masson, Wilson (man of the match), Stout and Lamb. Subs: Boyes, Hodds, Thomson, Leitch and McClelland.
