Vics were minus goalkeeper Jamie Robbie and top scorer Kevin Barker for the visit of East Craigie on Saturday.

And they were further reduced when C Eaton pulled up in the warm up. On the plus side Ryan Young and Paul Ross were available for selection for the first time this season after recovering from injury.

Vics fell behind on four minutes when a free kick from 20 yards took a deflection off the wall giving trialist keeper no chance. Before the home side could recover they found themselves two goals down.

A mistake was made by a Vics’ defender allowed the East Craigie striker a clear run on goal and he slipped the ball past the advancing ‘keeper. Vics were finding it hard to get out of their own half and were three goals in arrears on 15 minutes when a shot from 18 yards flashed into the corner of the net.

Eventually the shellshocked Vics created a chance and it was Easton who had his shot from 18 yards saved by the ‘keeper. Vics did get a goal back on 24 minutes when Stark launched a 40-yard free kick into the box which somehow deceived the East Craigie ‘keeper and the ball landed in the back of the net. This gave Vics some hope and they should have pulled a further goal on the stroke of half time but Easton blasted high and wide from 10 yards.

Half-time: Brechin Vics 1, East Craigie 3.

Unfortunately for Vics they found themselves further behind on 50 minutes when a back post cross was headed across goal with the striker reacting quickest to smash the ball into the net from 10 yards.

To their credit Vics continued to try and build attacks and were rewarded on the hour mark when Easton scored with a free kick from 25 yards hitting the ball high into the roof of the net.

The homesters continued to plug away for the remainder of the game and created a number of opportunities but there seemed to be a reluctance to shot at goal when the opportunity arose.

Buggins and Fyfe both had chances but they failed to pull the trigger and the chances were lost. East Craigie were still posing a considerable threat and themselves created a couple of opportunities that were dealt with by the Vics’ defence.

Team: Trialist, Ross, Stark, Easton, Cairney, S Eaton, Gauld, Laing, Fyfe, Buggins, Young. Substitutes: Whitworth, Fotheringham, Dunn and C. Eaton.

The game was effectively over within the first 15 minutes when Vics conceded three relatively soft goals. Although the remainder of the game was fairly even Vics again got caught napping early in the second half.

This is something the management will need to sort before Saturday’s GA Engineering Cup tie against Super League outfit Carnoustie Panmure.

The match kicks-off at Victoria Park at 2.30pm
