Two former Brechin City youth players have been called up to the Scotland Under-19s’ squad for the UEFA Under-19’s championship.

Ryan Gauld and John Souttar, now both of Dundee United, were named in Ricky Sbragia’s side on Wednesday, May 8, for the elite round of the tournament, which takes place in Belgium.

The squad will face hosts Belguim as well as England and Georgia in the competition, which will be held from May 24 and 29.

The winners of the group will advance to join hosts Lithuania in the finals from July 20 to August 1, with the draw being made on June 14.

Ryan Gauld, a 17-year-old midfielder from Laurencekirk, and John Souttar, a 16-year-old defender from Luthermuir, joined the Brechin City Youth set-up when they were aged only six.

Their talent was obvious from a young age, with Dundee United snapping them up three years later.

The duo signed three-year deals with the SPL side in January this year, and have both made first team appearances.

Both players have been involved in the Scotland set up before.

Ryan played a part in the Scotland under-19s team, which won group nine of the UEFA European Under-19s Championship qualifying round.

John was called up to the Scotland under-17s for the 2012 UEFA European Championship Qualifying campaign and was part of the Scotland under-19s recent training camp in Turkey.

During his time with the national side, John has faced opponents such as Sweden, Croatia, Belgium and Luxembourg.

He was also involved in international duty for the under-17s earlier this year.
