Brechin Vics narrowly missed out on taking a huge scalp in the Scottish Cup as they lost 2-1 to Penicuik Athletic.
Vics were first to threaten when Bailey won the ball from the Penicuik defence before setting up Steel whose effort from 20 yards was wide of the target.
Penicuik had a couple of chances on goal, but McCallum’s free kick was saved before a Ross effort went wide.
Brechin had an excellent chance on 20 minutes Bailey was in on goal but his shot from 18 yards was saved at the second attempt by the keeper.
Vics were giving as good as they were getting against opponents who are two divisions above them and should have taken the lead on 30 minutes when Lewis was clean through on goal, but his attempt went agonisingly wide of the goal with the keeper beaten.
Penicuik created the first chance of the second half when Somerville was one on one with Robbie but he poked his effort wide.
Vics responded however and on 57 minutes King had a free kick just wide of the post.
Good play involving King, Rausch and Bailey ended with the latter laying the ball back to King who from 22 yards sent a beauty of a shot high into the corner of the net giving the keeper no chance.
As expected Penicuik were stung into action and Robbie produced an excellent save from Somerville.
Penicuik equalised on 76 minutes when a speculative cross from the right wing eluded everyone in the box and the ball ended up in the net.
Vics were still very much in the game and were continually taking the game to their opponents.
Penicuik took the lead on 86 mins when Lough cut in from the right and sent a lovely shot high into the net.
Vics were not done however and had a chance in the last minute but a King free kick from 25 yards was just too high.
Next week Vics play Broughty Athletic in the East of Scotland Cup.
