In a repeat of last season’s well publicised sponsored walk, members of the Brechin City Football Club management committee have, once again, created an opportunity for City supporters to help their club – as well as contribute to a high profile charity.
In conjunction with charity partner, Cancer Research UK, the club is set to benefit from the 2012 version of this event.
This walk follows on from last year’s well-publicised inaugural event from Station Park in Forfar back to City’s home ground of Glebe Park in time for an Angus derby.
This time around volunteer walkers will travel off-road, this time from Tarfside near Edzell, to Glen Clova – a distance of approximately 12 miles.
Speaking on behalf of the club’s management committee, Grant Hood said: “This is seen to be a unique event within the Scottish Football community as, to the best of our knowledge, it’s the only one of it’s kind where supporters mix freely alongside everyone charged with the running of their club.
“It gives all participants the same opportunity to raise funds for both their local club and a charity close to most people’s hearts.”
Last year saw Brechin City, as a result of the various fund-raising events over the season, present a cheque of around £5,000 to Cancer Research.
“It’s a combination which sits well with supporters, sponsors and the club as a whole.
“Every fund-raising event driven by the club sees a spin-off for Cancer Research too,” continued Grant.
“We’re all too aware that manager Jim Weir and assistant Kevin McGowne were to take on the 3-Peaks Challenge as a fund-raiser for a particularly ill little girl they both know.
“This involved the climbing of specific peaks in Scotland, England and Wales – all within a 48 hour period.
“Given the size of the task they took on, it drove our committee members to fully commit to this particular challenge, albeit at a somewhat less demanding level.
“It’s events like these, allied to our upcoming Sunday-Funday event and our VIP Photograph competition, which hopefully illustrate to those in and around the club, and the wider football-following public, just what kind of positive community involvement Brechin City Football Club is all about,” said Grant.
The 2012 event takes place on Saturday, June 23, and supporters interested in participating should contact Grant Hood via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org or by calling the club’s commercial Line on 07817 910548 to raise any queries, or to register and request a sponsor form.
