Brechin Vics 2, Coupar Angus 0

COUPAR Angus were the visitors in what was Vics final League cup section match last Wednesday evening.

Vics started stongly and forced a succession of corner kicks in the first five minutes but without troubling the Coupar defence.

Vics first real chance came in ten minutes when Young was played in on goal but he screwed his shot wide of the target.

The home side came even closer on the quarter hour mark when a great Longmuir shot from 25 yards came crashing back off the cross-bar and was cleared to safety.

Coupar rarely threatened but Robbie had to look lively to cut out a dangerous cross.

Mihaylov was next to try his luck but his effort was easily saved by the Coupar keeper.

Vics were in control of the game and it was no surprise when they took the lead on the half hour.

Nicol’s persistence down the left saw him put in a great cross which was met by Black in the six-yard box and he was able to force the ball over the line past the despairing keeper.

Vics keeper Robbie was brought into action five minutes later when he was forced to tip over the bar a free-kick from 20 yards.

McNaught then produced a good save from the Coupar keeper with a well executed free kick from some 25 yards.

Vics were forced into a change early in the second half when Milne replaced the injured Lonmguir.

They were under pressure for the first 15 minutes of the second half but the defence held firm.

Vics made a further change, with McKellar replacing Black.

McKellar made an immediate impact when he crossed for Milne, who headed narrowly wide with the keeper well beaten.

Vics created another chance when Milne laid the ball back to McNaught but his shot from 20 yards sailed high over the bar.

They then deservedly extended their lead on 76 minutes with a well-worked goal. Mihaylov beat his man before passing to McKellar, who played a great slide rule pass to Milne, who, in turn, slotted the ball beyond the advancing keeper and into the net.

Vics dominated the closing stages but were unable to add to their tally.

Team - Robbie, Gauld, Longmuir, Buggins, Low, Young, Mihaylov, Gourlay, McNaught, Nicol and Black; subs - Milne and McKellar.

Brechin Vics kick-off their league campaign this coming Saturday.
