Opening league game win

Brechin Vics 8, Coupar Angus 0

Vics welcomed back Joe Myles but were still minus the injured Paul Ross, Ryan Young, Gavin Cooper and the unavailable David Fotheringham and David Easton in their opening league game. Chris Laing although not fully fit took a place on the subs bench.

Vics were tense at the start and it took them eight minutes to create the first chance when Duff headed over from six yards.

They eventually took the lead on 19 minutes with a well worked goal. C Eaton started the move from the back when he played Duff down the touchline, Duff in turn sent a cross to the back post and when Aitken squared to Buggins he made no mistake from 10 yards as he smashed the ball past the helpless keeper.

They doubled their lead four minutes later when great interplay between Fyfe and Barker, including a cheeky Fyfe back heel, gave Barker the chance and he coolly slotted home from six yards.

Vics were playing excellent football and increased their lead on 26 minutes.

Again it was C Eaton who played a through ball to Barker and he progressed to score easily after dummying the Coupar keeper.

Vics made it four on 40 minutes when Barker played in Aitken on goal and his shot from 18 yards went in off the post.

Barker completed his hat trick on 60 minutes with another well worked goal. Duff played a couple of one two’s before passing to Barker who from 18 yards sent an unstoppable shot past the Coupar keeper.

Myles replaced the impressive Fyfe mid way through the half and it took Myles only two minutes to show his worth when he made good progress down the left before sending in a delightful cross for Buggins to head past the keeper from eight yards.

Vics introduced Whitworth and Dunn for Aitken and Gourlay.

They extended their lead on 75 minutes from a free kick. S Eaton sent a 20 yards free kick into the corner of the net giving the keeper no chance.

Vics scored their eighth and final goal on 77 minutes when Cairney played a great ball through the heart of the Coupar defence for Duff to run on and finish from 30 yards as he passed the ball round the advancing keeper for a cool finish.

Although Vics rearguard had a quiet afternoon it should not be forgotten of the contribution made by Robbie, Gourlay Cairney and C Eaton as most of the play started from the back plus they thwarted any Coupar attacks before they reached Robbie in the goal.

Team - Robbie, Gourlay, C Eaton, Gauld, Cairney, S Eaton, Aitken, Buggins, Fyfe, Barker, Duff, Subs-Myles, Whitworth, Dunn, Laing.

Match ball for the game was sponsored by Alan Renilson of Stables Lounge.

This was a pleasing performance from Vics with some very well worked goals scored. Vics, however, are under no illusions that much harder tests are ahead of them starting on Saturday, September 8 with an away league game against Montrose Roselea.
