Reds undone by last-minute strike

BRECHIN City’s brave bid to get a result at Central Park on Saturday was undone when Cowdenbeath netted a last-minute winner.

City goalkeeper Craig Nelson denied Greg Stewart’s left-footed drive midway through the first half before Rory McKenzie fired over at the other end seven minutes before half time.

Stewart again went close after the restart but headed Dean Brett’s centre wide of the left-hand post from 12 yards with 20 minutes remaining.

Jon Robertson almost made the breakthrough for the Blue Brazil in the 86th minute, but his header from Liam Cusack’s corner cannoned back off a post.

And, just as Brechin looked to have hung on for a point, Derek Lyle popped up in the right place at the right time in the 90th minute, to slam Stewart’s cross into the roof of the net.

Despite the set-back City remain very much in the race for a top four finish, and have two home games in succession to look forward to - against Stirling Albion on Tuesday evening (tomorrow) and Dunmarton on Saturday.

Cowdenbeath - Flynn, Brett, Armstrong, Mbu, Adamson, McKenzie, Robertson, Fisher, Ramsay (Cusack), Lyle and Stewart.

Brechin City - Nelson, McLean (Fusco), Dunlop, Buist, Lindsay, McKenna, Molloy, Brady, Hodge, McKenzie and McManus (Crawford).
