Strong performances from Brechin’s U14s

Brechin City 1

Lochside 0

(match called off by Lochside 10 minutes into second half)

Due to the Brechin pitches being unplayable, the game was moved to Montrose, where play was dictated by a strong diagonal crosswind.

Brechin started playing into the wind, and were immediately pressurised by a Lochside team keen to impress.

Within two minutes, Brechin were lucky not to concede with a first break by Lochside seeing a shot over the bar.

Their defence had to soak up continued pressure by the Lochside boys, but eventually they began to improve with a through ball by C. Doan setting B. Irvine driving toward goal with the final shot rising over the bar.

Unfortunately, Lochside suffered an early casualty with their goalkeeper having to retire early in the first half.

Brechin continued to pressurise with a further shot from Doan being saved by the stand-in ‘keeper.

Lochside again counter attacked, drawing a fine response by ‘keeper J. Sim, who dived to collect the ball.

Further pressure by Lochside toward the end of the first half saw Sim again saving Brechin by racing off his line to clear from the oncoming forwards.

Half-time: Brechin City U14s, 0; Lochside, 0.

Starting the second half with the wind behind them, Brechin drove into the attack with Irvine chasing a through ball, only to see his shot saved by the Lochside ‘keeper.

Lochside suffered a second casualty following midfield clearance from R. Allison striking the Lochside boy in the body from short range and having to leave the field of play and reducing the team to 10 boys.

Brechin were spurred into action, and were rewarded nine minutes into the half with a goal from C. Booth.

K. Church-Forbes collected the ball in midfield and sent Booth through, closely challenged by the defence, but calmly slotting the ball past the oncoming ‘keeper with the outside of his left foot.

Within minutes of the restart the referee was called over by the Lochside manager and eventually called off the game as a result of three further players feeling unwell and unable to continue.

The outcome of the game will be decided following a review by the DDYFA committee.

There were strong performances from all the Brechin boys, but especially Booth and Sim.
