Carnoustie 1

Brechin Under-14s 4

Having not played since last year, it was a welcome return to league football for Brechin City Youths Under-14’s who travelled to Carnoustie on what was an excellent afternoon for football.

In the first half of the season, the team had secured a top three slot in the league and if this was to be maintained a win was vital. With 12 players to choose from, it was a changed side for this game but everyone put in an excellent performance.

Brechin dominated the game from the off, creating chance after chance. The constant movement of Steel and Stewart up front were causing the home defence problems with C. Crosby marshalling the back four and giving very little away.

With the home side playing a high defensive line, Brechin had to be at their best to beat the offside trap but despite a number of one-on-one situations it was from a free kick that Brechin took the lead, with Andrew Mitchell getting on the end of a Rogerson cross and finishing low into the corner with a well struck shot.

They stretched their lead a short time later after brilliant wing play on the left by Rogerson who crossed low into the box for Steel to score.

Stewart was then brought down in the box and took the resultant penalty himself which was well saved by the home ‘keeper.

Against the run of play, Carnoustie pulled a goal back when a cross into the box was headed past his own keeper by Renilson for an own goal.

Brechin then went straight up the park and regained their two goal lead when Rogerson scored from the penalty spot after Stewart was fouled for a 3-1 half time lead.

The second half was the same story with chance after chance being created with Renilson, Mathew Mitchell and Stewart coming close.

The final goal was the pick of the punch with Steel getting on the end of a Rogerson cross to score high into the net with a fantastic header.

A 4-1 win and three points in the bag was the end result on what was a great performance following a long lay off.
