Under-16s left ruing missed chances

Brechin Under-16s 1

Kirkcaldy YM Colts 2

Brechin City Youths Under-16s’ failure to capitalise on their opportunities in the first half lost them this first round Scottish Cup tie.

Within two minutes, Brechin forced a corner which floated in and rebounded to Booth who set Walker clear - driving toward goal he unleashed a shot which skimmed just past the right hand post.

Five minutes later Kirkcaldy went ahead. Chasing the ball down, the Kirkcaldy forward clashed with the Brechin goalkeeper, Church-Forbes, who had rushed out from his goal line and the referee pointed to the spot.

Kirkcaldy’s number five drove the penalty hard but Church-Forbes stood firm and parried the ball out. However, the kick had to be retaken as a Kirkcaldy player had infringed on the penalty area.

Again the player stepped up and this time, Church-Forbes had no chance with a well placed shot

Their heads up now, Kirkcaldy drove forward again and were awarded a free kick in the middle of the Brechin half.

The free kick was floated over the Brechin defence and was pounced upon by the Kirkcaldy number nine, who appeared to be offside, but took the opportunity well to extend their lead.

Brechin drove hard to get back into the game. A long driving run down the right flank by Irvine, ended up with his shot fired just over the bar.

Further opportunities came Brechin’s way but the boys were unable to make any headway.

Half-time: Brechin Under-16s 0, Kirkcaldy YM Colts 2.

Brechin came out fighting in the second half and drove hard at Kirkcaldy, but to no avail.

With five minutes to go, Brechin were awarded a free kick 20 yards out and in front of goal. Irvine stepped up and lobbed superb ball which dropped in under the bar.
