Brechin Under-16s 4
Montrose Vics 3
Brechin City Youths Under-16s and Montrose Vics met in this friendly match in an effort to stay match sharp during the festive period. Brechin were without four of their first team squad and a recognised ‘keeper.
Within five minutes, Brechin had an early chance which arose from a free kick 20 yards from goal. Thomson drove it low and hard but the shot went wide.
It was Thomson who gave Brechin the lead after 20 minutes when he found the target with a low, long range shot.
Three minutes later a solo run by Elder breached the Brechin defence and he beat Irvine to bring Montrose level.
Brechin regained their lead after 28 minutes – Anderson driving down the right and firing a low drive across goal, which was picked up by Duncan and slotted home from six yards.
Half-time: Brechin Under-16s 2, Montrose Vics 1.
Brechin extended their lead with a superb piece of linking play between Thomson and Walker. Thomson drove forward and passed to Walker who turned and deftly back heeled the ball into the path of Thomson who drove the ball into the net.
Montrose fought back and got a goal 23 minutes in to the second half, with Elder again driving through the defence to slot a low ball past substitute goalkeeper, Ryan Campbell.
Brechin regained their two goal advantage two minutes later. Walker drove in from the left to Anderson who knocked the ball down to Irvine who drove a low ball into the back of the net.
Straight from the restart, Montrose advanced up field and Whyte unleashed a long drive from the edge of the penalty box high into the net .
A club spokesperson said: “This was a good performance from a depleted Brechin side with Ryan Alexander noted as man of the match. Walker, Thomson, and Anderson also featured strongly with good performances coming from Reece Campbell in midfield and Somerville in defence. Billy Irvine and Ryan Alexander both played well as stand in goalkeepers each playing one half between the posts.”
