Under-17s win three games on the trot

Monifieth Under-17s 3

Brechin Under-17s 5

Brechin City Youths Under-17s travelled to Monifieth looking to make it three wins in a row after two mid-week victories.

They made the better start with Wilson striding down the right wing, before cutting back to the advancing Masson who drilled the ball just wide of the far post.

On 11 minutes, Lamb tested the ‘keeper with a great shot from 25 yards, who could only fumble the ball and an energetic Wilson tapped in to give the away side the early lead.

Brechin continued to exert pressure on the home defence with Stout laying off the ball to Lamb who chipped the ball just over the bar.

The preceding goal kick was poorly taken by Monifieth allowing Wilson to gain possession on the by-line, nutmeg the defender and then round the ‘keeper to tap in for his and Brechin’s second of the game.

Monifieth immediately responded from the kick off, leaving O’Neill no chance with a low drilled shot placed to his right into the goal.

On 43 minutes, a Monifieth corner saw the ball drop over O’Neill, allowing the striker to tap and level the scores.

Half-time: Monifieth Under-17s 2, Brechin Under-17s 2.

The second half began with Monifieth taking a long throw with the striker looping a header over the Brechin defence and into the empty goal.

On 60 minutes, Dye broke down the left, releasing the ball to Hodds who quickly laid it off to Lamb who levelled the score from 30 yards out, curling the ball into the top right corner.

Stout and Lamb were determined not to let this slip again and almost converted a terrific one-two, with Lamb just heading over the bar.

Wilson was then replaced on 75 minutes by Stephen, who instantly played in Stout, then setup Lamb who fired in to give Brechin the lead.

With just over 10 minutes remaining, Thomson replaced Masson before delivering a few testing passes over the Monifieth defence. The home keeper cleared a stray ball from the far side of his goal into the path of Watt who stroked the ball into an empty net from 35 yards.

Team: O’Neill, Dye, Watt, Black, Gilbert, Winton, Boyes, Masson, Wilson, Stout and Lamb (man of the match). Subs: Leitch, Hodds, Thomson and Stephen.
