The battle of the Vics produced little in the way of action in the opening 20 minutes, with both sides struggling to control play in the strong wind.
Brechin had more of the possession, but could not break down a resolute Arbroath defence.
Brechin’s first chance of note came after 29 minutes of play when a McKay cross was met by the head of Lewis but the Arbroath ‘keeper saved easily.
Arbroath took the lead on 43 minutes when a Mowatt shot from the left found the corner of the net.
Half-time: Brechin Vics 0, Arbroath Vics 1.
Brechin almost equalised a minute after the restart, but the ‘keeper saved a McKay effort with his legs and the ball was cleared to safety.
Brechin again came close on 57 minutes but Young was too high with his shot from 22 yards.
Both sides continued to struggle to master the conditions and as a result chances were at a premium.
Arbroath secured their victory on 89 minutes when Mowatt was allowed to shoot into the net unchallenged from eight yards.
Team: Robbie, Strachan, C. Eaton, Stephen, Ross, Steel, McKay, Young, Whitworth, Sturrock and Lewis. Subs: S. Eaton, Renilson, Mitchell, Wilson and Cargill.
A club spokesperson said: “A disappointing performance from Vics who never got going and were beaten by a hungrier Arbroath outfit.” Vics are at home again this Saturday (April 18) when Lochee Harp visit Victoria Park. Kick off is at 2.30 p.m.
