Half marathon event attracts 38 runners
SATURDAY saw the second White Caterthun Half Marathon, on behalf of the Guide Dogs, staged.
And, with a turnout of only 38 runners, it could well qualify as Scotland's smallest half marathon, a title the organisers would be quite happy with as they look for quality not quantity.
There was no doubt that the weather kept the spirits high among the runners and spectators and this was borne out by Roger Von Gompel retaining his overall winner's position and beating his previous time by a full four minutes at 1:19:17.
The race attracts a wide mix of ages from both male and female runners and one runner travelled all the way from Birmingham to take part, which is not bad considering the size of the field.
Karen Lyons (first female finisher), who finished the race in a time of 1-38-35, starts the descent from the summit of the White Caterthun.
The race is organised by local runner Brian McLaughlin and a small band of friends and family with the sole purpose of raising funds for the Guide Dog charity and this year they have raised over 1800, with money still coming in.
Brian resurrected this race last year as a means of raising funds for his London marathon place with the Guide Dogs team.
Unfortunately, due to a back injury picked up during training for last year's marathon, he will not be taking part in the first Virgin London marathon.
As well as the half marathon there was also a 5K fun run which was enjoyed by an equally small field of 13 runners.
Members of the Arbroath branch of the Guide Dogs were in attendance, with a number of puppies which are just about to start their full training.
