Late strikes seal place in semis

Millgate 1, Brechin Bolag AFC 3 - The Bolag are through to the semi-final of the League Cup after two late goals saw off the challenge from Millgate.

Very little football was played throughout thanks to gale force winds, driving rain and the home side's reluctance to come forward but at the final whistle the team who wanted to win the right way rather than on penalties had made it to the next round.

The visiting team made five changes to the side which had played so poorly the week before and, with the wind behind them, looked to build a first half lead.

Bolag's early pressure was rewarded when Blair McCombie's corner was headed home strongly by Kevin MacAulay after six minutes.

Millgate quite happily slowed the game down, with the ball more out of play than in it. This put the Brechiners out of their stride with the game literally bogged down. To make matters worse the home side managed to get a corner and scored from it on 40 minutes to make it 1-1 at half time.

The gale became stronger during the break and the referee briefly considered calling things off before the second-half got underway.

The Bolag were expecting an onslaught from Millgate but instead, despite the massive wind advantage, they continued to run the clock down - which again made for a horrible spectacle.

The Bolag kept at it without much success and the home side's preference of deciding the tie on penalty kicks was looking likely.

At this stage Blair McCombie came to the sidelines moaning about only having had four touches of the ball in 80 minutes of non football - but his fifth touch was soon to make all the difference when the Bolag's hard work was finally rewarded. Ryan McIntosh won a tackle and passed to Ernie Clark, whose pin-point pass found McCombie in the clear, and with that fifth touch he put the ball past the goalie and into the net on 82 minutes.

Millgate were forced out of their shell and they tried to put pressure on but were given a bit of their own treatment.

The home side had a few free kicks and corners which were well defended before Bolag made sure of the win with a last gasp goal on the break. McCombie drew the keeper and cut the ball back to Kevin Rennie, who rolled the ball into the net to finish a poor match.

This Sunday the Bolag are at home to championship chasers Strathmore in the match of the day. There is little love lost between the sides - it could be a cracker!

Kick off is at 11am with players to meet at 10am. Training is on Thursday at the Leisure Centre at 6pm.
