Memorable Murrayfield day for Strachan family
THERE few Brechiners who can claim to have performed at the same venue as the likes of U2, REM and Celine Dion.
Yet, Saturday, April 24 was an occasion when three members of local family achieved such distinction.
George Strachan and eldest son Colin turned out at Murrayfield Stadium, representing Strathmore Rugby Club in the Scottish Hydro Regional Bowl final.
Younger son Scott played a supporting roll on the backroom staff.
Amongst the large contingent from the city providing vocal and moral support, was George's dad Wiff, a weel-kent face in these parts.
Unfortunately, despite George and Colin's best efforts,Strathmore lost narrowly to a talented North Berwick RFC by 13 points to eight.
Both did themselves proud and one or two shandies were consumed by way of commiseration in Forfar later in the evening.
To some, George is better known for his exploits with the round ball, as both a goalkeeper and outfield player of not inconsiderable talent.
It's a testament to George's stamina and fitness when one considers it is some 25 years ago he was starring for the Steakhouse and Brechin HSFP's in the Sunday welfare league.
Despite being the oldest player on the park, George rolled back the years and it is understood it may have been a first for father and son playing at the national stadium together for the same side.
