AGM held for Brechin Angling Club

Brechin Angling Club held it’s annual general meeting in the Bridgend Bar at the end of another busy and successful year.

Club champion Jock Craig faced some close competition this year from Ron Gray in particular to the extent that after drawing on points, it was decided on weight of fish caught in all competitions throughout the year. Even then it was a close run thing. Ladies’ champion Mrs Julie Robertson graciously presented the trophies.

The club has had a busy year in many respects, and they continue to campaign for the conservation of salmon and sea trout by appeal to the European Commission regarding conservation regulations and by supporting the Esk District Salmon Fisheries Board petition to the Scottish government.

The club was very well received and generated a lot of interest in the Brechin marquee and at the flycasting area at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee event at Glamis in May.

Club juniors, Jack Hamilton and Martin Runcie continue to do well at national level, first by winning through the qualifying stages, and then going on to win bronze medals at the home internationals in August.

This was no mean feat! It was followed up by again qualifying for the national team for 2013.

The club is delighted that Michael Craig has also won through the qualification events, winning the best newcomer trophy and will join them in representing Scotland in Wales next year.

The club’s annual fly tying evening in September was very well attended.

As ever international fly tier Steve Newsome gave a comprehensive presentation to suit both absolute beginners and the more accomplished tyer.

Brechin Angling Club is keen to attract new members (DD9 postcode applicants have priority) and in particular junior members.

Forget about fishing games on the computer, come and try the real thing!
