Saturday saw Brechin’s senior rugby team (BRUCE) host their first matches of the season at Guthrie Park Cricket and Rugby ground.

The event saw the return of the Mackie Mammoths from Stonehaven and the first ever visit for the Hillfoots Castups from Tillycoultry.

In the first match, the visiting teams went head-to-head in a fiercely-fought match, with Mackie Mammoths coming out victorious thanks to a last gasp try right at the death.

For the second match Brechin BRUCE came together against a very experienced team in Mackie Mammoths.

Brechin showed great improvement on their previous matches against Mackie and indeed had the majority of possession during the match.

Only the dogged defence of Mackie saved them from several scoring opportunities by the Brechin team.

Mackie did, however, manage a score against the run-of-play and it was left to Brechin’s Mike Roulston to level the game and give Brechin a very well-deserved draw.

The final match of the afternoon was a bruising encounter between Hillfoots Castups and Brechin BRUCE.

Hillfoots came out playing with increased vigour, in an attempt to set aside their disappointment of losing their first match against Mackie, but were met with a patched-up Brechin side determined to go one step further and actually win a game, something that they had not managed in their short history.

The powerful Brechin pack really took the game to Hillfoots and tries from Dougie Scott, Mark Arbuthnot and Campbell Scott saw Brechin BRUCE win by a three-two score-line.

After the matches the players of all teams and their families were treated to the other important aspect of golden-oldies rugby - a social event with food and drinks enjoyed by all.

Many thanks go to all of the club’s supporters and sponsors for all of their efforts which made for an excellent day.

Rugby at micro, junior and veteran levels in Brechin is really doing very well at the moment with increased numbers of players and greatly improved displays on the field.

If anyone would like to come along, the micros and juniors meet at Guthrie Park on Tuesday nights from 6.30 pm to 8 pm and Sundays from 11 am to 12.30 pm.

The veterans meet on Thursday nights from 6.30 pm to 8 pm for training, and it is a great way to exercise at minimal cost.
