Friday, May 29 will see the arrival of Brechin’s veteran rugby team’s guests from Reggio Emilia in Italy in the shape of The Old Becks for a few days of fun, friendship and fraternity that is the ethos of golden oldies rugby the world over.
The visitors are making the return journey from the Brechin team’s visit to them in early 2014 where they played a game and were treated to fantastic hospitality over the course of their visit.
The guests will be staying in the Northern Hotel for the duration of their stay with visits planned to local distilleries and Brechin Castle to let them see some of the history surrounding the Brechin Area.
The five-day visit will be very fast-paced with a late Friday arrival and early Tuesday departure with lots of fun and games to fit into the days they will be here.
The Italians will be taking part in some of the ring games at the Brechin Pageant and the parades involved with the occasion on the Saturday. The Pageant is an important local community event which the rugby club has supported over many years and it is fitting that The Old Becks will get to see the town busy with so many people visiting the event.
The pageant will be followed by a welcoming party being held in the Northern Hotel with a buffet and music to show the Italians a true Scottish Welcome with members of the club, dignitaries and sponsors all attending on the night.
Sunday will see the real reason for the Italians coming to the area as they take on The Bruce in a game which is being held at Strathmore Rugby Club in Forfar, which has strong allegiances with the Brechin Club who are truly grateful for the help from their neighbours with this hospitality.
The game will kick off at 2.30 p.m. and all are invited to come along and watch the spectacle of an International Game being held locally.
The match will be followed by a Players’ Dinner which will take the form of a Burns Supper which whilst out of season will hopefully give the guests a wee bit of Scottish culture.
There will also be a party at night with music and fun to be had.
Huge thanks go to Brymers Butchers for the offer of the Haggis for this event and for a buffet for the farewell party
Monday, June 1 will see the visit to a local distillery and Brechin Castle with lunch in the town and a walk around the City.
On Monday night there will be a farewell party being held in the Nova suite with music from Eddie McNaughton and friends.
This will be a chance for all families and friends of the club to come along and bid farewell to their friends from Northern Italy.
The visit will provide a nice wee boost to the town with between 20 &and25 visitors coming from Italy and good turn outs to all of the social events which are already very well subscribed to.
