A COMBINED team from Montrose Rugby Club and Lathallan School took part in the Girls’ Rugby National Sevens Finals Day in Edinburgh last weekend.
Coached by Caroline Campbell from Montrose Rugby, the girls have been training together for two months and this was their first competitive event as a joint side.
After a training workshop, led by Iain Millar of Scottish Rugby, the girls played against a joint team from Gala and Hawick.
The first half was very close, with the local girls having to cope with strong, fast running from the borders side.
In the second period the Montrose/Lathallan girls pulled out all of the stops to come out nine-six winners.
Shona Campbell, from Montrose and a pupil at Lathallan School, was selected as the Under-12 Player of the Tournament and was presented with a player issue Scottish Women’s Six Nations jersey.
Lisa Singleton, a teacher at Lathallan School, stated: “The day was a great success with the girls demonstrating excellent skills in the workshop and the match.
“The players were all a credit to the school and the club and to compete as they did, against the likes of Gala and Hawick, shows their potential. I am looking forward to watching them play again.”
