Blair McCombie retained his Brechin Golf Club’s championship with a 5 & 3 victory over Steppie McIntosh. The match was played over 36 holes last Sunday.
In the opening round, Steppie was 3 up after 10 holes. The highlight of this part of the match was Blair’s par 4 at the 9th. His tee shot was deep in the trees on the left. It looked impossible to get back to the fairway. Not only did he achieve this, however, but he put his 3rd shot onto the green and holed a good putt for a par. This inspired Blair to play the back nine in 33 shots and finish the first round 3 up.
The second round was not such a high standard. Steppie managed to get it back to 1 down but Blair’s extra distance off the tee gave him a big advantage on the longer holes. Blair won the match at the 15th to complete a 5 & 3 victory.
Baird Rosebowl: Also played the same day was the Baird Rosebowl Handicap final between Steve Lamb and Euan Auld.
This was a very tight match with both players taking the lead in the first 18 holes but ending all square after the first round. The second round was much the same played at a good standard with Steve holing an excellent long putt on the 35th hole to eventually complete a 2 & 1 victory.
