One More Win Will Seal Playoff Spot

JIM Duffy praised what he described as a "very professional team performance" as Brechin City recorded their first win of the season over fellow play-off hopefuls Peterhead.

Duffy wasn't only pleased by the commitment shown by his side, but also by the way his players applied themselves throughout the 90 minutes in a game which could prove vital to the Glebe Parkers' promotion aspirations.

"It was one of those days when I don't think we had anyone who really played badly," said Duffy.

"There were some great individual performances, but above all, we played well as a team and stuck together.

"I thought we thoroughly merited the win and I can only recall Craig Nelson having to deal with one shot from outside the box in 90 minutes.

"At the other end, their goalkeeper has had three excellent saves from Darren Smith, Rory McAllister and Charlie King.

"Peterhead did throw everything at us late in the game and even pushed big Bobby Mann up into a striker's role.

"That's why we stuck on big "Wardy" for the last couple of minutes and he got in a couple of important headers for us and helped us clear our lines.

"Overall though, we created the best chances and played some good football in what were difficult conditions for both sides.

"Ian Nimmo came back into the side and perhaps Steven Canning was a bit unfortunate to be left out.

"However, we felt Ian had the legs which were needed in this sort of game and he played an important role.

"I can't underestimate, however, the team ethic which was pivotal in winning this one and it's another game we can build on."

League leaders Ayr United visit Glebe Park this Saturday and Duffy said his side must give their all once again if they are to continue their recent good form.

"They are up there on merit and, while our players feel that we should have won two if not three of the games we have played against them this season, the important factor is what happens on Saturday.

"We know that one more win and we are in the play-offs. We are nearly across the line now and with Stirling having to play Peterhead Saturday's win means we have one foot in the play-offs.

"However, it would be great to make mathematically certain at Glebe Park in front of our home fans.

"Ayr are after the title and we still have a lot to play for. So we want to apply ourselves properly and there would be no greater lift for the side than getting a result against a team on top of the league.

"It will take hard work and the same sort of commitment we have shown in the last two games. However, we have shown in these games, home and away, we have the players to do the job and who are more than capable when called upon.

"I would also like to thank all those Brechin fans who gave us such great backing at Peterhead on Saturday.

"Often the game takes its supporters for granted and the players and I would like to thank those who got right behind us at Peterhead and ask them that they do the same in our remaining fixtures."

There may be further good news for the Glebe Park fans in the next week or so.

"We are still holding talks with our out-of-contract players. There are a couple more who we are keen to keep hold of who have expressed a desire to stay at the club and hopefully we will be in a position to make an announcement on that next week."
