Saturday saw the first competitive outing for the recently formed Brechin’s Golden Oldies Rugby Team – BRUCE (Brechin Rugby Union Competing Elders) - against a much more experienced Mackie Academy Mammoths team.
A strenuous training session by the Mammoths coaches was followed by a fiercely competed match in which the Brechin side more than held their own and greatly impressed the Mackie players and coaches alike considering the short time that the Brechin team had been formed.
Two first half Mammoths tries were all that separated the teams and, as the game progressed, Brechin held up very well defensively and although they had the ball over the opposition try line the Mackie team managed to hold the ball up to stop the much deserved scoring try.
Man of the match for Brechin was Robin Leslie Melville for his lung-busting 60 yard dash catching a certain try scoring break by a Mackie player short of the line.
It would however be a shame to single out any individual as the entire team played so strongly in what was a thoroughly enjoyable day out.
The BRUCE team train every Thursday at the Guthrie Park cricket pitch from 7 pm and have a few more fixtures lined up in the near future,.
Anyone over 35 years of age or not playing first team competitive rugby would be more than welcome to pop along and join the team.
