Snap up your tickets for a King's dinner!
BRECHIN City Football Club's longest-serving player will be honoured with a testimonial dinner in the Northern Hotel on Saturday, December 5.
The event will provide local football fans with the opportunity to honour one of the club's most popular professionals of the modern era and hear the sibling of a World Cup winner to boot!
Charlie King's dinner will see Dick Campbell, manager of Forfar Athletic, and a man who was responsible for bringing Charlie to Glebe Park in the first place, act as MC.
Also speaking at the dinner will be Sandy Strang and John Stiles, son of England World Cup winner Nobby Stiles.
Kevin Mackie, a representative on Charlie's testimonial committee said: "This is a great opportunity for the community locally to come along and pay their respects to a lad who is the first to turn up at events locally when called upon.
"The term model pro' could have been made for Charlie King and he is an individual who has been taken to the hearts of the local community, not only those who are regulars at Glebe Park.
"Charlie is the first to offer his services when medals at boys' club functions are handed out or there is an opportunity to give something back to the community where he plays his football and this is our opportunity to repay that dedication.
"We have deliberately kept the cost of the tickets as low as we possibly could in an effort to get as many of the club's supporters along on the night.
"For 25, which on average is about ten to fifteen pounds cheaper than the normal cost of a sportsman's dinner ticket, you can enjoy a nice meal, great company, some great speakers and the opportunity to take part in the raffle and auction all for Charlie's benefit.
"We are hopeful of a good turn out of local people on the night to give Charlie the sort of backing he deserves."
As for the list of speakers, it's top notch. Sandy Strang has a background in journalism and has penned long running columns in "The Herald", "The Edinburgh Evening News", "The Sun" and "Scotland on Sunday".
He is a footballer who wore nine for Cambridge University - and won at Wembley; a cricketer who's played in a record number of Scotland Cup finals - nine! He's a man with a tale - or nine - to tell!
John Stiles was born in Manchester in 1964. John Stiles spent five years as a professional footballer with Leeds United.
John, however, will always be known as a son of Nobby. His father, of course, is 1966 World Cup winning hero and former Manchester United legend Nobby Stiles.
Once his football career was over, finishing with Doncaster Rovers John then moved into the football agency industry, including working for the same management company that looked after the Spice Girls.
John then progressed onto the 'after dinner' speaker circuit and can also compere and act as (MC) master of ceremonies.
John continued to progress into world of comedy and has now established himself as one of the most popular acts on the circuit.
He also prides himself on the fact that his act is very original and funny, with a great emphasis on voices and impressions, which sets him apart. He is also proud to say that he can cater for mixed and men-only audiences.
MC for the evening, Dick Campbell, needs little introduction - as a former Brechin City skipper and manager and a man who led the club to the first consecutive promotions in their 100-year plus history and a cup final, just for good measure. Dick is known for his quiet and laid-back approach, not! He is now in charge at Brechin's third division neighbours Forfar Athletic.
Tickets, priced 25, will be available from "The Brechin Advertiser", 13 Swan Street, and Lindsay's Paper Shop, St Ninian's Square in the next week or so.
