STABLES LOSE A MAN AND THE MATCH
Northern Vaults 7, Stables 2 - The Stables were away on league duty at the weekend when they made the short trip to Montrose for a clash with Northern Vaults.
The Brechin outfit got off to the perfect start after just a minute. Ian Ingram sent a pass over the Vaults defence to Craig Robertson and his left foot shot left the home side's goalie with no chance.
On five minutes referee Eric Taylor raised a few laughs when he flashed a red card at Lee Elder and at the Vaults skipper. With both players wondering what they had done Mr Taylor then said "Gotcha! April Fool!" much to the delight of both sides.
After play resumed midfielder Ian Ingram was forced to hobble off with a twisted ankle on 15 minutes, to be replaced by Stuart Potter.
Meantime the Vaults were gradually getting back into the game and equalised on the half hour mark when Bruce Ritchie fumbled the ball into his own net.
Vaults added another two before the break and just before half time Fraser Smith had to be taken off after twisting his knee. Unfortunately it would appear that Smith will be out for a lengthy period with what looks like cruciate ligament damage.
Manager Graham Bruce came on for the second half to replace the injured Smith, forcing Gary Southam back to right midfield.
The Stables rearguard of Fleming, Forbes, Garnes and skipper Reid were coping well at the start of the second half, while Potter and Douglas were having a good battle in the middle of the park too. Southam and Robertson were also in the thick of it too on either side of the midfield.
Stables were back in the game on 55 minutes after a long ball up the park was flicked on by Southam into the path of Bruce, his lob from 30 yards left the keeper with no chance.
With Stables pushing up for an equaliser, Vaults hit them on the counter attack and hit number four on 60 minutes.
After that the heads went down and the home side hit a further three goals before the full time whistle was blown.
A spokesperson for the Brechin side said: "A disappointing result for us today. Fair play to our hosts though, they took their chances well and deserved the win".
The management and players would like to wish both Fraser Smith and Jordan McIntosh speedy recoveries from their injuries. McIntosh broke his knee the previous week up at Bervie in Stables' 3-1 win in the Review cup and he will be out for the rest of the year.
Training will be on Thursday evening at 6pm up at the public park. Stables are at home this week to Marykirk in the league, players should meet at the park for 10am.
Stables - B. Ritchie, G. Fleming, D. Forbes, M. Garnes, A. Reid, B. Douglas, F. Smith (G. Bruce), I. Ingram (S. Potter), G. Southam, L. Elder, C. Robertson.
