Stables 'blow' early lead

Golf Inn 4, Stables 2 - Strong winds ensured that Stables' clash away at Montrose's Golf Inn was very much a game of two halves at the weekend.

The Brechin side had the wind advantage in the first half and after some sustained pressure took the lead on 20 minutes. A great through ball from Ingram released Southam down the right, and his cross for Mark Garnes was coolly finished.

More pressure from Stables followed, but it would be another 15 minutes before they added number two. Mark Garnes again finishing well from a superb free kick played in by Ferguson.

Stables failed to capitalise further on the advantage of the wind. With half time beckoning a miscued clearance from Ferguson fell straight to a Golfie player whose clinical finish left Bruce Ritchie with no chance.

The second half was a role reversal of the first, and whilst the defence of Ferguson, Forbes, Reid and Strachan, and the midfield of Smith, Robertson, Ingram and Low all battled strongly against the constant pressure, it was inevitable that they would concede goals.

It was now proving impossible to get the ball to strikers Garnes and Southam due to the ever increasing wind in their faces.

Concede goals they did, and Golfie had soon scored their second after a poorly defended corner. Number three followed shortly after, when a free kick on the edge of the box was curled into Ritchie's bottom left corner.

With only minutes to go Golf Inn got their fourth and final goal when Strachan was turned inside the box and, from a good cross, the ball was headed into the empty net.

Speaking after the game assistant manager Andy Reid said: "We failed to capitalise from a good start and so suffered the consequences in the second half. We have to learn to be more ruthless when we have the wind advantage, otherwise we will continue to be punished like today."

Training will be on Thursday at the public park at 6:15pm. Stables' next match is at home to Mearns United on Sunday. All players are requested to be there for 10am.
