Stand renaming in honour of former City chairman
BRECHIN City Football Club will next month honour the memory of late former chairman and life-long fan David Will CBE by renaming the Trinity Road stand after him.
The David H Will Stand will officially be named on August 3 during a pre-season match against a full-strength Aberdeen side.
Chairman Ken Ferguson said the event will be a fitting tribute to the man whose passion for football took him to the very top of the game.
He said: "David's football story started at the grass roots. He went on to become the chair of Brechin City FC and then president of the SFA before becoming honorary vice-president of FIFA.
"He was a Brechin fan first though and wherever he was in the world he'd always check in with the club at 4.45pm on a Saturday to find out the score.
"Obviously this has been organised to recognise the affection that David had for the club and if the fans came to support that, it would be greatly appreciated."
Mr Ferguson said the choice of opposition for the occasion and the naming of the stand after Mr Will was in itself fitting, as the owner of the company who built the stand is the owner of Aberdeen FC, Stewart Milne.
He said: "David was very instrumental in getting that stand erected as he was chairman at the time. It was also the Stewart Milne Group that built the stand and they were also the club's sponsor at the time."
The stand was opened in the 1991-92 season and officially opened the following season by former Grade One referee Tom "Tiny" Wharton, known for his anything but diminutive stature.
David took over as chairman of Brechin City in the 1966 season, having previously been within the ranks of his local Edzell amateur side. He guided the Glebe Park side through many difficult years, but eventually took the club to its first championship success in the 1982-83 season.
David's popularity and passion for football saw him become president of the SFA before becoming an executive committee member of UEFA. He moved to the Board of Appeal for FIFA competitions in 1987, before joining the FIFA executive committee in 1990 as honorary vice-president. It was the first time Scotland had been represented at this level.
David, who was awarded his CBE for services to football in 2002, continued to play a highly active role in world football right up until his untimely death.
The pre-season friendly against Aberdeen kicks off at 7.45pm.
