'UP AND UNDER' PROVIDES KILLER BLOW FOR STABLES

Mearns United 2, Stables 0 - Stables made the trip up to Fettercairn for the Piggins Cup Final against Mearns United.

With suspensions for Gary Southam and Mark Garnes, and a couple of other players stuck in the middle of the North sea at work the omens did not look good. With a constant drizzle and wind the watching crowd were treated to a pulsating end to end cup final.

Both sides had good spells of domination in the first half, but both sets of defenders were in top form. Keeper Bruce Ritchie was having a quiet day, with Andy Reid, Mike Strachan, Derek Forbes and Stephen Ferguson in front of him keeping the Mearns attack at bay. Full back Ferguson in particular put in a tremendous shift, turning defence into attack at every available opportunity.

Spring chickens Clark Renilson and Ian Ingram were having a good battle in the middle of the park against the Mearns midfield, ably assisted by Greg Fleming and Craig Robertson on either side.

Strikers Fraser Smith and Jordan McIntosh both put in good shifts, with both players putting in a power of running and hard graft to try and get in behind a strong Mearns defence.

The only clear cut chance in the first half fell to Ingram, but his shot was a bit off target. Half time came and went with neither side gaining the advantage.

The second half was going much the same way until the 60th minute when former Stables striker Davie Shanks escaped his marker to power in a header from close range leaving Ritchie no chance. This rocked the Brechin side for the next ten minutes or so, but they continued to try and get that elusive equaliser.

Disaster struck on the 75th minute though when a big up and under from what seemed like the top of the cairn somehow went over Ritchie's head and into the back of the net. A killer blow for the Brechin side and try as they did, it proved too much.

A spokesperson commented:"The management and players would like to thank all the supporters who braved the wilds to cheer them on, and also congratulate fellow Brechin side the Bolag who, after their recent wins are well on course to reach a second cup final this season."

Team: B. Ritchie, S. Ferguson, D. Forbes, M. Strachan, A. Reid, C. Renilson, G. Fleming, I. Ingram, J. McIntosh, F. Smith (B. Douglas), C. Robertson. Subs: S. Potter, G. Bruce and C. Low all unused.

Stables take on the Red Lion at Balwyllo this Sunday, players should meet at the Stables car park for 9.45 am.
