Young 'keeper signs forms for Dundee FC
THE latest product of the Brechin City Youths Football Club production line has been fixed up by a senior club, 13 year-old Callum Reekie signing forms with Dundee Football Club
The young goalkeeper has showed such promise with his Brechin City Youths U-14 side, and had been training with local junior side, Brechin Vics.
It was from there that former Vics player, Chris Paton, a community coach with the Dark Blues, recommended Callum to Dundee goalkeeping coach and former Brechin City player, Bobby Geddes.
Callum's proud father Andy said: "Callum has played with Brechin City Youths since the Under-9s right up until half-way through this season with the U-14s.
"He played three trial games for Dundee Football Club against St Mirren, Falkirk and Stenhousemuir and he must have done enough to impress the coaching staff, because he was signed after his third game.
"Signing for Dundee means he can't play football for the school team any more, which is a pity.
"However, he has been busy just with training recently. As well as his commitments with Dundee, he has been in at the Vics for the past three months and that's where Chris Paton first noticed him.
"Callum is delighted with the move and he is very keen to make progress with his football.
"And he knows that this is the first of many big steaps and learning curves he has to undertake.
"There was a lot of luck involved in his signing for Dundee. We actually put him down to the Vics, because we wanted him to get extra goalkeeping coaching.
"You never know, a couple of years from now, he might well come back on-loan to Brechin City if he works hard and listens to the coaching staff.
"The youth development squad is assessed on a yearly basis up until the Under-19s when they play under Barry Smith.
"Callum loves his football and spends Monday night with Bobby Geddes, Tuesday night with the team, Wednesday and Thursday nights with Bobby Geddes.
"There is a big time commitment there and, on top of that, he was also training with the Vics Monday nights and Wednesday nights, so he has certainly been doing plenty training!
"It hasn't affected his school work as yet and he knows it's up to him to keep on top of things and ensure that the school work is as important a priority as the football.
"The ball is very much in Callum's court and he will get a bit of a break now, because there is a winter shut down.
"Its great to see another Brechin youngster getting a chance like this. The youngsters get so much bad publicity sometimes and it's great to have a good news story to talk about."
Callum is a second year pupil at Brechin High School.
