St Ninian’s Square, Brechin, was abuzz with chatter, laughter and music on June 7, when Gardner Memorial Church hosted the Big Lunch.

This is a national event and the theme this year was ‘The Gruffalo’ who, despite her busy schedule, found time to visit the Brechin lunch.

The Big Lunch is an event open to all, and members of the Gardner congregation were joined by many from the local community to enjoy a picnic lunch and entertainment for the fourth year running .

Music was provided by the Brechin City Silver Band, the Brechin Jazz Band, the Brechin High School string ensemble with Hazel Judge, and Heather Crabb on flute accompanied by Isobel Luke.

Representatives from Andover School were kept busy producing ‘fun pancakes’ at their stall. The home bakes stall along with Gardner’s ‘home team’ of tea and coffee production kept locals fed and watered, all ably assisted by Brechin High School students and the Air Cadets.

The raffle drew many punters, having seen the long table of prizes donated by so many generous local businesses and individuals.

A spokesperson for the event said: “Special thanks go to the Air Cadet Corps, whose help with erecting the tents and marquees and providing assistance wherever it was needed was once more invaluable.

“They and some of their parents also helped valiantly with clearing away after the event. Despite the high winds and a chill in the air, a great time was had by all.”
