At last the weather is starting to improve and gardeners can start to brave it outside and make a start, writes Brechin library’s Katy Hardie. Whether you are a vegetable, borders, pots and basket or organic gardener Brechin Library has a wide selection of gardening books to accommodate all types.
The Thrifty Gardener by Alys Fowler: This is a book that will distil the gardening process into a series of bite-sized sections for green fingered DIY-ers who are short of space and money. It demystifies gardening and gives clear simple instructions that reveal the ins and outs of soil, seeds, growing and sowing. At the heart of this book is a DIY ethic that says you don’t have to buy what you need, you can make it, take it or swap it. From making window boxes out of wine boxes, to creating your own stylish compost bin, from bulking up perennials to finding plants for free this book is packed with off-beat projects for a new generation of gardeners.
RSPB Gardening for Wildlife: Gardening for wildlife is hugely enjoyable. There is something uplifting about having butterflies in your flowerbeds, frogs in your water feature and birds in your bushesand knowing they are there because of you. But if you want a nice garden don’t worry! This book busts the myths that wildlife gardeners have to be “wild” or that you can only garden for wildlife in a “wild garden”. You can easily fit in wildlife gardening alongside everything else you want from your garden. So no matter how large or small your garden, whether it is formal or a family football pitch there are all sorts of things you can do if you love wildlife and want to encourage more.
