MONTROSE Museum is currently hosting a display which brings together a small selection of outstanding paintings by the famous renaissance artist Pieter Brueghel the Younger, from the collection of Angus Museums and Aberdeen Art Gallery.

These paintings show how this famous renaissance artist, who was born in 1564 or 1565 and who earned the nickname “Hell Brueghel” from his gory fantastical scenes, had another side - painting tender genre and religious subjects.

The display focuses on how these paintings came into this country and explores the stories of their first Scottish owners, some of whom had gained access to these Flemish paintings, which were in Spanish collections, following the Napoleonic Wars when legitimately acquired paintings as well as war booty returned to Britain with the troops.

The exhibition runs until Saturday, April 7 and is open from 10 am to 5 pm, Monday to Saturday, admission free.
