Bid to make Angus even more delicious

Farmers markets provide lots of opportunities to buy top-class, fresh, local produce, often from the farmers, fruit growers, butter-churners and beekeepers responsible!

The county of Angus, which has an excellent reputation for its local produce, hosts two farmers markets every month - in Montrose on the first Saturday of the month and in Forfar on the second Saturday of the month.

“Shopping at a farmers market is a very friendly, laid-back way to shop,” said Carol Robbie, manager of Angus Farmers Market.

“Angus Farmers Market gathers a fabulous selection of local producers together in one venue, providing customers with the opportunity to speak to the person who has grown the crops, fed the beasts or made the jam – and, on many occasions, to taste the products on offer.”

Carol explained Angus Farmers Market will be at Montrose High Street on Saturday, August 4, and at Forfar Mart the next Saturday, with both events running from 9 am to 1 pm.

“To encourage more people to shop locally and seasonally at Angus Farmers Markets, we recently introduced a loyalty card scheme,” explained Carol.

“Every time shoppers visit the farmers market in Montrose or Forfar, their loyalty card is stamped and, when they have six stamps on their card, they can enter our December draw for £150 worth of Angus Farmers Market vouchers.”

Angus Farmers Market is part of Angus Council’s Taste of Angus campaign, which has been established to raise awareness locally and nationally of the excellent food and drink grown, made, harvested, caught and smoked across Angus.

“Great food is a very effective tourist attraction so we want as many people as possible to know how mouth-watering Angus can be,” said Angus Council tourism spokesperson, Councillor Mairi Evans.

“Both of the Angus Farmers Markets provide a wonderful showcase for our top-class, local produce, with stall holders selling delicacies such as Arbroath Smokies; beef and lamb from the Angus Glens; jams, marmalades and chutneys made in local farmhouses; fresh vegetables from nearby farms; pork and ham from Lunan Bay’s herd of free-range pigs; and soft fruit picked in the Angus berry fields.

“It’s no wonder Angus is considered a food-lovers’ paradise!”
