WITH THE publication of the programme for next month’s Ruthven Music Festival, it appears local classical music fans are in for a treat over the weekend of June 7 to 9.

With top musicians, an acoustically-perfect setting, a concert of music by Italian composers on June 7 and a concert of romantic music on the afternoon of June 9, this year’s festival certainly promises to live up to the incredibly high standards set by the 23 previous Ruthven Music Festivals.

“The Friday evening concert will span 150 years of Italian music,” explained Evelyn Hood of Ruthven Music Festival, which is held in Ruthven Church, mid-way between Kirriemuir and Alyth.

“The music of Albinoni, Monteverdi, Rossini and Vivaldi will be played by the Ruthven Festival Musicians, led by Audrey Mattner and conducted by Howard Duthie, with solo performances by oboist Geoffrey Bridge, a Ruthven Festival favourite. In addition, following their outstanding contributions to last year’s Festival, there will be a performance by Perth-based choir Chansons.”

The second part of the festival 2013 will be held on the afternoon of Sunday, June 9, with a concert inspired by one of Shakespeare’s most famous lines… ‘If music be the food of love, play on’. The Ruthven Festival Musicians will perform beautifully romantic compositions by Tchaikovsky, Glazunov and Piazzolla. They will be led by Audrey Matter, conducted by Allan Young and joined by Ben Norris, the critically-acclaimed violinist from Perth.

Ben, who plays with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, has recently performed in Sydney, Beijing and Rome, as well as at the BBC Proms, Edinburgh International Festival and London Handel Festival.
