North-east panto queen Elaine C Smith is to play global singing sensation Susan Boyle in a new stage musical about her inspirational life story.
Charting her meteoric rise from obscurity to international stardom, the musical, I Dreamed a Dream© will tour internationally next year.
And the first Scottish date on the tour will be at His Majesty’s Theatre in Aberdeen, when the show, produced by Michael Harrison, will run from Tuesday, to Saturday, April 3 to 7 2012.
Tickets for the city performances go on sale to APA Friends on Thursday, August 4, and to the general public the following Thursday online at www.boxofficeaberdeen.com, by phone at 01224 641122 and at Aberdeen Box Office at the Music Hall and His Majesty’s Theatre.
Susan Boyle resonated around the world when she stepped on to the Britain’s Got Talent stage and tore up the rule book. She confounded the judges, the audience and over 300 million with access to YouTube who watched her dazzling performance of I Dreamed a Dream.
Two albums later she has smashed multiple music records, sold over 14 million albums and continues to enchant the world with every chapter of her journey.
Elaine C Smith said: “Susan and I first met following a remark Susan made during a press interview regarding who she would like to see play her in a movie about her life. She mentioned me and I was both flattered and amused by this.
“I now know Susan personally, so I am delighted that she approves of the whole idea of the stage show. She has been involved with the project from the start of the process and will also be involved in every aspect of the production as it comes to fruition.
“I am both excited and a bit daunted by the whole thing but hope to do my best in honouring Susan’s life and work.”
Michael Harrison added: “Susan Boyle is an inspiring woman and her story is an excellent one to tell - someone with a raw talent who surprises the world and overturns all the odds to make a new life for herself.
“It’s got all the qualities of a fairytale, but with the added bonus of being absolutely true. I am looking forward to the tour very much.”
