The Lichties defended brilliantly against Premiership side St Mirren before hitting them late in the game, Dylan Paterson scoring in the third minute of injury time to secure all three points.

It got Arbroath off to the perfect start in their Premier Sports Cup group ahead of their second game which was due to be played against Cowdenbeath last night, Wednesday.

"They were well organised and as the game went on we got better and better.

"Going through there and winning is a tremendous boost, not that we needed it, but everyone is getting to know what’s expected of being an Arbroath player nowadays.

"They did well but could have been a lot better in possession.

"Overall, you have to be delighted.”

Cambell’s subs all made an impact, none more so than Paterson who netted the game’s only goal.

"I’m delighted for wee Dylan,” added the club’s assistant.

"He’s just a youngster, we had him on the bench and threw him on to give him a chance and he’s done well.

"When you keep possession in the forward third you’re going to pull defenders about and in the last 10 or 15 minutes we were looking dangerous.”

Following the Cowdenbeath game, next up for Arbroath is a trip to FC Edinburgh on Saturday.
